Al Roker Opens Up About Feeling ‘Vulnerable’ with His Kids After Recent Health Scare

Al Roker health updates!! Earlier this year Al Roker health, Al Roker faced some serious health challenges that brought a new sense of vulnerability, especially as a father.

During the yearly roundtable on June 16 with his fellow dads, Al opened up about the emotional journey he’s had this year.

Towards the end of 2022, the TODAY weatherman went through a series of life-threatening medical crises linked to blood clots. He also recently underwent knee replacement surgery.

Al Roker shared with Craig Melvin, Carson Daly, and Willie Geist, “You know, life is going on smoothly, and you think everything’s great. Then suddenly, out of nowhere, this health scare hits you.”

In November, Rocker was rushed to the hospital after a blood clot traveled from his leg to his lungs. Doctors also discovered internal bleeding and he underwent a lengthy seven-hour surgery to repair a tear in his small intestine.

Later, Al Roker learned just how critical the situation had been, and how his family had been deeply worried outside his hospital room.

He confessed, “It was the first time I felt this vulnerability about being a father. You want to be that pillar of strength for them. But when you’re in a hospital bed struggling to get up, there’s a part of you that doesn’t want them to see you like that.”

Since then, Al has made a full recovery and relished moments like the annual get-together with the other dads. They all enjoyed some delicious barbecue, while Al shared his thoughts on aging.

“That’s another thing. It’s something I’ve been thinking about. I’m going to be 69 this year,” Al mused. “My dad was 69 when he passed away. So it’s a strange feeling. Like, ‘Will I surpass his years?'”

Craig chimed in reassuringly, “Listen, with all you’ve been through, you’re going to live until at least 90. You got a bunch of new parts.”

Adding to the exciting news, Al is about to become a grandfather for the first time this summer. His daughter, Courtney Roker Laga, is expecting her first child with husband Wesley Laga.

“It’s the wildest thing,” Al shared. “You raise them, and then suddenly you realize your oldest is going to be a parent. And we’re just about a month away from becoming grandparents.”

Craig wondered if the scare from last year made Al’s family appreciate him more.

“I don’t know,” Al pondered.

“We’ll find out on Father’s Day,” Carson quipped. “Expect two dozen golf balls!!”

The dads raised a toast to fatherhood and to Al’s upcoming grandfatherhood.

“I’ll keep you guys posted,” Al promised. “Because it’s your turn next.”
